RFA Auction Weekend

Asheville

Thu Aug 27 — Sun Aug 30

One house in the mountains, a live auction on Saturday, and three days of whatever we feel like in a town that runs on beer. Here's the weekend. Scroll down and tell us what you're in for.

The house is booked

The House

Alpine Artistry Estate at sunset
Alpine Artistry Estate
6 bedrooms · 5.5 baths · 15 min to downtown · 216 Mbps

Six bedrooms up in the hills with mountain views off the deck, murals on damn near every wall, and a downstairs built for exactly this: a ten-recliner movie theater and a game room with a pool table, air hockey, two arcade cabinets, skee-ball, and a nine-foot shuffleboard. The auction runs off the theater screen. The wifi is fast enough to run it and put the guys at home on video at the same time.

What We Could Do

01

Who are you?

02

Where are you at?

03

The Menu

Three buttons on each one. "If enough guys" is a real answer, not a cop-out — it's how we find out what actually has a crowd.

The Float

~$30 · about 2 hours · Friday or Saturday morning

Zen Tubing's South Asheville put-in on the French Broad, twenty minutes from the house. Tube, life jacket, and shuttle included, then a slow two-hour drift. Coolers are allowed — 30 quarts or less, cans only, no glass and no liquor. Morning trips are the relaxed ones; the river take-out shuts at 4:30.

Heads up: the outfitter from last time (French Broad Outfitters) was destroyed by Helene and never reopened. This is the new spot.

Golf

$50–200 · about 4 hours · morning

Skip the city course — Asheville Muni is down to nine holes until 2028, since the front nine is currently a disc golf course. These are the real ones near us, worst to best as far as the wallet is concerned. Links go to each course. If you know somewhere better, say so at the bottom and we'll go there instead.

The Drum Circle

Free · Friday from 6pm · Pritchard Park

Hundreds of people and a park full of drums in the middle of downtown, every Friday night since 2001. We've done this before and it was a highlight. Costs nothing, requires nothing, and it's a five-minute walk from the breweries.

South Slope Crawl

Friday night · walkable

A dozen-plus breweries packed into a few blocks, most of them a five-minute walk apart. Burial first because it has a real kitchen and a beer garden, then Wicked Weed's Funkatorium, Green Man, Hi-Wire, Catawba, and Asheville Brewing for pizza at the point in the night when pizza becomes necessary.

Shindig on the Green

Free · Saturday 7–10pm · Pack Square

Sixtieth year of it. String bands, bluegrass, cloggers on a stage, and informal jam sessions scattered around the park, with Bear's Smokehouse there for food. August 29 is the last one of the season.

One Real Group Dinner

Needs a reservation · book by mid-August

One proper sit-down where everybody's at the same table. Candidates are Sovereign (best cocktail list in town, fits us comfortably), Chestnut, Posana, or Pack's Tavern if we want it easy. This is the one thing that genuinely needs a booking, which is why the number matters.

The Good Bars

Late · downtown

For when the brewery portion has run its course. Little Jumbo (Garden & Gun called it one of the best in the South), Crow & Quill, which has no sign on the door, and Red Ribbon Society, a speakeasy in the old boiler room under the Flat Iron.

Cook a Night

One night at the house · probably Saturday

Enough of us actually cook that this should be a real thing and not an afterthought. Gourmet kitchen, a grill and a firepit out back, and a table that seats ten. Plan a menu, split the shopping, and put on an actual meal instead of grabbing whatever. Saturday's the natural night — the auction ends and nobody has to drive anywhere.

Say yes here and tell us at the bottom what you'd want to make.

04

Auction start time

Saturday, 2 to 3 hours. Everybody answers this one — it's a league question, not a trip question.

05

Anything else?

A golf course you like better, what you'd want to cook, ideas we missed, constraints, lobbying, trash talk. Optional.
